ROMAN BATHS & PUMP ROOM

Stall Street, Bath, Somerset, BA1 1LZ

The Roman Baths and Pump Room complex in the heart of Bath is one of the best-preserved Roman religious spas in the world, built around 70 AD at the site of Britain's only natural hot spring, which still supplies 1.17 million litres of 46°C water daily. While no longer used for bathing, the extensive archaeological site allows visitors to walk on original Roman pavements around the centerpiece Great Bath, view the preserved ruins of the Temple of Sulis Minerva, and explore a museum housing a trove of Roman treasures and votive offerings. Complementing the ancient ruins is the magnificent Georgian Pump Room, a Grade I listed neoclassical salon where 18th-century high society—including figures like Jane Austen—gathered to drink the health-giving spring water, a tradition that continues today.
