Hidden beneath what looks like an ordinary farmhouse near St Andrews, Scotland’s Secret Bunker was once a top-secret Cold War command centre. Built in the 1950s as part of the RAF’s ROTOR early-warning system and later repurposed for civil defence, it lies some 100 feet underground and is encased in thick concrete to protect against attack.
Visitors descend through a nearly 150-metre tunnel to explore two levels of authentic displays: operations rooms, a BBC broadcast suite, radar equipment, dormitories, the broadcasting studios, communication hubs and more. The museum has preserved many original artefacts and offers a chilling insight into what life might have been during a time of nuclear threat.
