The Natural Science Centre is an educational and recreational visitor centre situated in Newchapel, one of the oldest villages in North Staffordshire. The famous engineer and canal builder, James Brindley, is buried here. The Director is Michael Pace who has written many articles on astronomy and given lectures to local groups. The Centre has a planetarium, observatory, alternative energy displays and a large conservation area. New solar telescope now enables visitors to observe the Sun's incredible surface in the daytime. The themes and their relationship to each other provide a memorable experience for visitors. The Centre caters for all ages and has wheelchair access. Guided tours and slide shows give a better insight into the many themes portrayed. This applies especially to school parties, local societies and interest groups. Teachers will be particularly interested in the relevance to the new National Curriculum for Science and Geography. Families can take advantage of the pleasant picnic areas around the site.

The Amerton Railway is a 2ft gauge line, set in the rolling Staffordshire countryside, and situated at the very popular Amerton Working Farm. The Railway is home to the 1897 Bagnall-built saddle tank Isabel which became such a part of Stafford life on her plinth outside the main Stafford Station. Now you can ride behind this historic loco, and others, over our mile long railway. Steam trains operate on Sundays and Bank Holidays from the end of March until the end of October. A diesel service runs on Saturdays from Easter until the end of August. There is also a limited diesel service mid-week during the main school holidays and of course Santa Specials in December. All services are subject to availability of rolling stock.

The Churnet Valley Railway takes you on a journey back to the classic days of railway travel on a rural line that passes through beautiful countryside known as Staffordshire's "Little Switzerland".

Our picturesque stations offer lots of interest with a complete range of visitor facilities, and there's plenty more to see and enjoy along the way.

In addition to the 10½ mile return journey along the valley, there's a taste of contrasting moorland scenery on the 16-mile round trip along the Cauldon branch. Refreshments are available at both Froghall and Cheddleton stations, and at Consall drinks from the station trolley. The Souvenir shop is sited at Froghall Station and boasts an extensive range of gifts.

Foxfield Railway

 

The Foxfield Light Railway Society at Blythe Bridge is run as an attraction by volunteer enthusiasts on what was once a colliery line constructed in 1893 to carry coal from Foxfield Colliery to the North Staffordshire Railway at Blythe Bridge.
 

Visitors can enjoy a 5-mile steam-hauled round trip though some of North Staffordshire's delightful countryside and view a selection of the society's collection of locomotives, rolling stock and railway relics.

The "Station Buffet" provides light refreshments and there is a souvenir shop.

This volunteer run former colliery railway operates passenger trains from its principal station at Brownhills West, in Chasewater Country Park. Vintage steam and diesel trains run to Lakeside Wildfowl Reserve and to new stations at Chasewater Heaths and Chasetown (Church Street).

Steam Railway gives a scenic 3 mile return trip along the side of historic Rudyard Lake. Always operates one of its 5 steam engines to pull the enclosed carriages along the lake. The railway is the best way to see and access the Lakes attractions. Voted recently the 3rd most romantic spot in the UK it was the place where the parents of Rudyard Kipling met and named their son after it to mark the event. Runs every Sunday throughout the year, April to Oct are open on Saturdays and throughout school holidays.

The British Wildlife Rescue Centre based at Amerton Farm is a facility which includes a hospital area with veterinary cover, a re-homing area and many enclosures with a wide variety of both domestic and wild animals.

Once the hunting ground of ancient royalty, Cannock Chase is today a picturesque playground of woodland walks, wildlife and superb scenery. Cannock Chase Country Park covers 4.5 square miles (3,000 acres) making it one of the largest country parks in Britain. Although the country park is largely 'motorless', its many car parks are easily accessible and pleasant picnic facilities abound. An area roughly between Stafford, Cannock and Rugeley.

Highgate Common Country Park

Lies in the south-west of Staffordshire, only five miles west of Dudley. Although many walks are available, its 278 acres of open heathland and woodland areas make a very pleasant and popular spot for the family group who do not wish to wander too far from their car. Toilets and refreshments are available.
