Once the capital of the Anglo-Saxon kingdom of West Mercia, this curious city is a vibrant merger of the modern and the rustic and is one of only a dozen English cities to be recorded in the Domesday Book. It is dominated by a magnificent 11th century cathedral which contains two important treasures - the fascinating 13th century Mappa Mundi, one of the earliest world atlases, and the world's largest chained library containing unique books dating back to the 8th century. The original cathedral was built in the 7th century by Bishop Putta but was promptly destroyed by Welsh invaders.

One of the oldest pubs here is The Green Dragon, which dates back to at least 1600. The River Wye flows through the town beneath a six-arched bridge while a stone tablet marks the place where Charles 11’s mistress Nell Gwynne was apparently born.

The city’s museum and art gallery - housed within a timber-framed ‘black and white’ building so typical of the county’s architecture - possesses many important artifacts, including a Bronze Age burial as well as finds from the Roman town of Magnis (modern-day Kentchester).

While Hereford cattle graze happily in the pastures surrounding the city, visitors can shop until they drop in the High Town area of the city or pop into Hereford Cider Museum where they can enjoy a guided tour and sample the local tipple made at the King Offa’s distillery. This is, after all, the home of Bulmers, the biggest cider-making company in the world.

Anvil Cottage is of real character, beams, exposed brickwork, natural woods and antique furniture. Suitable for wheel chair and less able guests. Apple Bough and Cider Press cottages have oak floors, fired earth tiles, leather suites, fully equipped kitchens, four-poster and Rococo beds, all complimented with designer fabrics and accessories; they can be let as one unit to sleep 10 guests, else 6 and 4 respectively. Apple Bough has a ground floor bedroom with en-suite 'wet room', full wheelchair access.

WAGONERS COTTAGE is a one storey, two bed roomed, very popular holiday cottage converted from an old farm wagon shed. It has exposed beams and a charm of its own views of open countryside, a patio area with barbecue plus large lawn at the back, all enclosed. Sleeps 2-4 persons in two bedrooms.

BARN HOUSE AND OWLS NEST are two, very comfortable three bed roomed cottages. They have modern kitchens, new bathrooms, sitting and dining rooms in each. Plus the convenience of an extra toilet downstairs. Each self-catering cottage sleeps from 2-6 persons and has its own private enclosed garden, garden furniture, barbecues and views of open countryside. Sleeps 2-6 persons in 3 bedrooms. These cottages are popular with both couples and families.

THE GRANARY is a superb barn conversion sleeping from 6-12. The Granary has original oak beams, an oak floor boarded lounge with large brown leather sofas and a large farmhouse kitchen with a rustic slated floor and a table to seat up to 12. It has three very spacious bedrooms and three large bathrooms. It can be rented on its own or together with one, two or three of our other cottages, suitable for a large family group. *By Prior Arrangement.
