Llanberis is surrounded by the mountains of the Snowdonia National Park and stands at the foot of Mount Snowdon. From the town you can take a train on Britain's only rack and pinion railway to the top of the mountain or, if you are feeling energetic, follow one of the marked paths to the top.
For decades, Llanberis has been popular with walkers and climbers but now additional outdoor pursuits are available in the area including water sports, mountain biking, and paragliding.
Llanberis sits in a pass through the mountains with the twin lakes of Llyn Padarn and Llyn Peris either side. The small narrow-gauge Llanberis Railway runs along the north shore of Llyn Padarn and uses locomotives that once worked hauling slate wagons in Dinorwic quarries. Llanberis is also the starting point of the coaches which take visitors on underground tours of the nearby "Electric Mountain" power station which uses off-peak electricity to pump water up to a reservoir. At the flick of a switch, this water is then allowed to run down pipes to turbines which can very quickly generate masses of electricity to meet peak demands.
