Holyhead, on the tiny Holy Island, Anglesey, is much more than a busy port for the UK to Ireland ferry routes and many people pass by without noticing what the town and the island has to offer.
It is in fact a wild place, with sea cliffs, moutains, wild bays and secluded beaches offering the holidaymaker something a bit different. It has its own special island feel.
The town itself has a number of places to interest visitors, with street markets, cinema, theatre etc. There are many prehistoric sites and a roman fort can be found in the town centre from which the town developed. Here you will also find St. Cybi's Church with its lovely William Morris stained glass windows.
Beddmanarch Bay is a place to spot wildlife from and to enjoy coastal walks, where you can enjoy a gentle ascent up Holyhead Mountain (712 feet). You can explore the remnants of a stone village, stone circles and hill forts, and visit the rare flowers around the South Stack lighthouse.
