Places to eat in Bala.

Bala is a picturesque and historic little market town consisting of little more than a main street, lying on the edge of the Snowdonia National Park in a designated "Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty".

Bala Lake (Llyn Tegid), is the larges body of fresh water in Wales and, at four miles long, is an excellent sailing water, often with considerable waves generated by the wind blowing down its length. Boats and Kayaks are available for hire but, apart from safety boats, motorised craft are not allowed. Lakeside camping and caravanning sites exist and along the south shore runs the steam-hauled narrow-gauge Bala Lake Railway.

The town was founded by Royal Charter around 1310 and today is possibly one of the best places to hear the spoken Welsh language (one of the oldest languages in Europe), as it is the first language of around 80% of the town's 2000+ population.

Built in 1870 this is one of the finest Victorian country houses in Wales. Precise attention is paid to all the little trimmings, canapés are a joy and one has the distinct feeling of being cosseted. Whilst the cuisine is classic it is not inflexible and little flashes of rebellion occasionally surface in the best possible way. A good wine list with house wine.
