In a field in Beddgelert is the grave of Gelert, the faithful hound of the 13th century Prince Llewelyn. The story goes that the prince went hunting but his hound did not go with him. On his return the hound ran to him with blood all over his fur. The worried prince ran to look for his young son but discovered the cot empty and all around was covered in blood. Assuming the dog had killed his son, Llewelyn took his sword and killed it but at the hound's final painful cry there was an answering cry from the child. Llewelyn followed the sound and discovered his unharmed son with the body of a wolf which Gelert had killed. Saddened at what he had done, Llewelyn buried Gelert here and his grave has been marked ever since.
