MAESTEG
A major coal-mining town near
Bridgend, Maesteg stands on the banks of the River
Lynfi and owed its initial prosperity to iron
working before the discovery of ‘black gold’.
Since then it has been transformed and is now one
of the most important shopping centres in the
region. It was the birthplace of the 20th
century poet Vernon Watkins.
