Although this charming Dorset village features
strongly in Thomas Hardy’s sweeping novel
‘Tess of the D’Urbervilles’, it is probably
better known for its evocative 16th Century
bridge over the River Frome. Hardy called this
town ‘Wellbridge’ and based his tragic tale
around a legend involving the Turberville
family who lived at Jacobean Woolbridge Manor
– now a hotel.
His heroine, ‘Tess Durbeyfield’, spent her fictional honeymoon in the manor with her husband-to-be, Angel Clare. Nearby stand the ruins of 12th Century Bindon Abbey.
