Originally the region's main Cinque Port, this East Sussex coastal town, was occupied by the Romans for a time and William the Conqueror landed in 1066 at nearby Selnac (Battle), to defeat King Harold. Hastings was transformed during the 19th century into a popular seaside resort. Its superb three-mile promenade links Hastings with the sister resort of St Leonard's and the town's harbour is a haven for sailing and water-sport. The
Fishermen's Museum features an example of an old sailing ship. Close to the ruined castle, you'll be able view the smugglers' caves.
