Surrey Museums & Galleries

including civic and independent art galleries and museums in Surrey...

Museums long ago ceased to be stuffy rooms full of glass cases containing bits of old pottery and fossilised bones. Today even most conventional museums include changing displays but over recent years there has been a growth in industrial and "living" museums. Here you can learn about local heritage, get a feel for how people lived and worked, the hardships they endured...

Galleries listed include not just civic galleries displaying publicly owned artworks, but also privately owned galleries with items for sale.

Tranquil waterway running for nearly twenty miles through the heart of Surrey.

The Wey was one of the first British rivers to be made navigable, and opened to barge traffic in 1653.

This 15.5 mile waterway linked Guildford to Weybridge on the Thames, and then to London.

The Godalming Navigation, opened in 1764, enabled barges to work a further 4ml upriver. The award-winning visitor centre at Dapdune Wharf in Guildford tells the story of the Navigations and the people who lived and worked on them, through interactive exhibitions. Visitors can see where the huge Wey barges were built and climb aboard Reliance, one of the last surviving barges. Boat trips are available.
