Hertford is a small ancient market town going back to Saxon times when it was originally fortified by the son of Alfred the Great. The castle remnants are now made up of tranquil ruins and gardens, you can still see some of the details. The flint and stone walls are an impressive seven feet thick. The Gatehouse beyond is a Grade 1 listed building which the council now occupy.
The town is in a lovely position being at the junction of four river valleys, and its houses follow the old historical layout, there are many heritage buildings to be seen including several churches, the Shire Hall, Corn Exchange, Hertford Museum, etc. Its prosperity grew out its association with the rivers when corn, barley and other crops began to be transported along them.
The town centre has been made into a conservation area to preserve its appeal. You will find specialist shops, and plenty of places to eat and drink making it a lively centre that draws people in from outlying areas.
