Local Restaurants, Cafes, Pubs, Bars, etc in Berkhamsted
Places to eat in Berkhamsted.
Nestled amid the Hertfordshire countryside is historic Berkhamstead, which has one of the oldest motte and bailey castles in England dating back to Norman the Conqueror. The ruined castle is now looked after by English Heritage and to discover more of its amazing history, a visit to the Castle Lodge is recommended.
Berkhamstead has a lovely atmosphere and is a lively cultural centre, with the novelist Graham Greene having been born here - one his books used some of the places from the town in its text.
The prosperous market town still retains much of its charm keeping many of its historic buildings, and the middle of the town has been made a conservation area to preserve its character.
For canal boat enthusiasts the Grand Junction Canal can be found running through the town, making it an excellent stop over point and Berkhamstead is well situated for visiting the beautiful Chiltern Hills, which are set more or less on its doorstep, excellent for walkers. Also near to is the 5000 acre Ashridge Estate, now owned by the National Trust.
