Scott's Grotto is a series of interconnected chambers, extending some 67ft into the chalk hillside, was built for, John Scott, an 18th century poet. The grotto is open between 2.00pm and 4.30pm on Saturdays and Bank Holiday Mondays, from the 1st April and 30th September.

Ancient woodland - a rare surviving example of a medieval royal hunting forest. Of great historical and ecological importance, Hatfield Forest is a designated SSSI and National Nature Reserve.

The pollarded hornbeams and oaks support a wide variety of wildlife and there are many excellent walks and nature trails, as well as fishing in the lake.

During summer cattle graze in the forest.

Vast area of open downland and woods. This magnificent and varied estate runs across the borders of Herts and Bucks, along the main ridge of the Chiltern Hills.


There are 2000ha (5000 acres) of woodlands, commons and chalk downland supporting a rich variety of wildlife and offering splendid walks through outstanding scenery.


The focal point of the area is the Monument, erected in 1832 to the Duke of Bridgewater. There are also splendid views from Ivinghoe Beacon, accessible from Steps Hill.
