Once the cutlery capital of England, Thaxted can
proudly boast that it is one of England’s best-preserved towns. It has a
rich harvest of timber-framed buildings, which include a guildhall built
around 1400. This doubled as a town hall and the meeting place of local
craftsmen. The local church of St John the Baptist is almost cathedral-like
and has a tower and spire reaching 181 feet. Nearby is a fully-restored,
working Georgian tower windmill, part of which is now a museum.
