The closest seaside resort to the great London metropolis, Southend is iconic as a place of jellied eels, endless amusement arcades and summer time shows. It was a small, insignificant hamlet until the early part of the 19th century. A visit by Queen Caroline and her daughter, Princess Charlotte, who stayed at the Georgian Royal Terrace, unwittingly created a new destination for holidaymakers. The coming of the railway served to make it popular with the masses.

Today this irrepressible town on the north bank of the River Thames has even more to offer, from beaches and gardens to white knuckle rides and waterborne adventure. Its programme of events includes Europe’s largest free airshow, regattas, firework displays, a jazz festival and a classic car run.

Its iron pier has survived numerous near-fatal incidents and is the longest in the world at over a mile, and for those who find this a daunting distance Southend has its own electric railway.

Nearby the remains of 12th century Prittlewell Priory have been turned into a local museum.
