The so-called capital of Essex's "sunshine coast", Victorian-Edwardian Clacton offers a bustling seaside experience with family entertainment high on its list of priorities. Among its annual events is a two-day air show.

For most holidaymakers, however, its is the splendid beaches, busy pier, amusements and beautifully manicured seafront gardens that will prove most enduring.

Holland Haven Country Park offers a chance to get away from the hustle and bustle, boasting a maze of coastal footpaths and a cliff top route to nearby Frinton-on-Sea.

St Osyth Priory is a 15th century gatehouse set in formal grounds. It houses an important art collection. St Osyth, the wife of a Saxon king, was reputedly beheaded by Vikings.
