This county town, just 35 miles from London, was founded by the Romans and later became an important market town.
Its 15th century church of St. Mary the Virgin was designated as a cathedral in the early part of the 20th century.
The 200-acre Hanningfield Reservoir, an important nature reserve with many delightful woodland walks, is a few miles from the town centre.
Equally appealing are the 20-acre Royal Horticultural Society gardens at Hyde Hall.
Beautiful Hylands House in the village of Writtle is set in 574 acres of parkland while the oldest surviving wooden building
in the country can be seen at Greensted – a Saxon log church built in the 11th century.
Guglielmo Marconi built the world's first wireless factory in Chelmsford and broadcast the first radio programmes in 1920.
His pioneering work is celebrated at The National Wireless and Television Museum.
