Although its origins lie in prehistory, Braintree enjoyed several hundred years of prosperity due to its importance as a wool-weaving centre. In modern times it became the hub of the giant Courtaulds textile empire. The company built the town hall, a school and the local church. Since then, the school has become a museum and one of its exhibitions describes the life and times of the local 17th century naturalist John Ray.

Nearby are two ancient, timber-framed barns that once formed part of a settlement run by the Knights Templar. Built in the 13th century, they have been transformed into "living" museums.

We cannot give a full list of all available food outlets but below is a small selection of those available in Braintree or surrounding areas.
