It was a small, insignificant hamlet until the early part of the 19th century. A visit by Queen Caroline and her daughter, Princess Charlotte, who stayed at the Georgian Royal Terrace, unwittingly created a new destination for holidaymakers. Nearby the remains of 12th century Prittlewell Priory have been turned into a local museum.
