Lying on the banks of the River Colne, Halstead has a broad main street that leads to a bridge spanning the river. Its historic Townsford Mill is a huge three-storey wooden building dating to the late 18th century. Originally a corn mill, it was later purchased by Samuel Courtauld as a centre for silk weaving.

The local church contains tombs to the Bourchier family whose most famous member was Sir Robert Bourchier. He distinguished himself fighting alongside the Black Prince at the Battle of Crecy in 1346, eventually dying of plague.
