Its 15th century church of St. Mary the Virgin was designated as a cathedral in the early part of the 20th century.

The 200-acre Hanningfield Reservoir, an important nature reserve with many delightful woodland walks, is a few miles from the town centre. Guglielmo Marconi built the world's first wireless factory in Chelmsford and broadcast the first radio programmes in 1920. His pioneering work is celebrated at The National Wireless and Television Museum.
