Berkshire Tourist Information

Let us help you plan your ideal vacation in Berkshire...

The Royal County of Berkshire (Royal because of the presence of a royal residence, Windsor Castle, within its boundary) is one of the oldest in England, dating from around 840.

Much of the county contains a rural and even wooded feel to it despite its close proximity to London. The original county town was Abingdon but not only was this status removed from it in 1867 in favour of Reading, but Abingdon was later transferred into Buckinghamshire by a boundary change.

Reading itself is now a considerable town, one of the largest urban areas to have not been granted city status. A centre of information technology, many computer and technology companies have a presence there including Cisco, Fujitsu, Microsoft, Oracle, Nvidia, Sage, Semantec and Ericsson.

Local attractions within the county include two race-courses, Ascot and Newbury, Windsor with its park, castle, and Legoland.

The River Thames and several of its tributories are prominent features of the county providing many opportunities for boating activities.

There are woodland and canal-side walks, rural scenery, and plenty of historic properties to visit but the county, with excellent rail and road links, can also serve as a base for those wishing to also visit London
