Industrial Luton features Britain's fastest-growing airport, and is part of Bedfordshire for ceremonial purposes only. It was the original home of Vauxhall cars and once had a major lace and hat-making industry, hence the reason why the football team's nickname is The Hatters.
There are a number of parks including Wardown, which also has a lace museum, and Stockwood, which has both a craft museum and the Mossman Collection. The town stages Europe’s largest one-day carnival. Dating back to the 12th century is St Mary’s Church, while Luton Hoo is a restored Robert Adam mansion, set in parkland designed by "Capability" Brown. Nearby lies the ruin of Someries Castle, built in the 15th century.
