New Forest - Castles, Cathedrals, Monuments,
Stately Homes & Palaces

Since the stone age, man has been creating majestic structures that we still marvel at today.

Whether you are interested in ancient monuments, battlefield sites, re-enactments, Roman and Norman forts and castles, Stately Homes, Country Houses, Historic Cathedrals, Ruined Abbeys etc, this is the page that should give you the information you need.

Here we try to list properties in private ownership but open to the public (even if only occasionally) as well as those in the care of the National Trust or English/Scottish Heritage.

We know that not all the properties in New Forest are listed. Please help us make this guide comprehensive by giving details of missing attractions here.

Hurst Castle, built by Henry VIII as one of a chain of coastal fortresses, is located at the end of a shingle spit which extends 1 1/2 miles from Milford-on-Sea. The end of the spit is only 3/4 miles from the Isle of Wight. Access is either on foot from Keyhaven or Milford-on-Sea, or by ferry from Keyhaven.

The castle was completed in 1544. In 1648, Charles I was imprisoned here before being taken to London for his trial and execution. During the Napoleonic wars and again in the 1860s, the castle was modernised and enormous armoured wings were added. Two of the huge 38 ton guns installed in the 1870s can still be viewed in their casemates. During World War II, the castle was manned with coastal gun batteries and searchlights. Educational and group visits are welcomed at the castle which is open daily between April and October. Refreshments are available in the tearooms.

BREAMORE HOUSE & MUSEUM

Tel: 01725 512468       Fax: 01725 512858
Web site: www.breamorehouse.com

Take yourself back in time and enjoy the country experience by visiting the Elizabethan Breamore House and its surrounding Stuart village.

The Manor House was completed in 1583 by the Dodington family, five years prior to the Spanish Armada.

It houses a fine collection of paintings, tapestries, porcelain, period furniture crafted from oak, walnut and mahogany, and many other interesting items of historical, national and family interest. The surrounding 17th century village of Breamore is largely unspoilt with many old thatched cottages, an extensive 'common' and a great deal of history.

Life in the village can be relived in the Breamore Countryside Museum, which provides a fascinating insight into the days when the village was self-sufficient. Visitors can see full-size replicas of: a farm worker's cottage before the advent of electricity; a blacksmith's shop; a dairy; a brewery; a wheelwright's shop; a saddler's shop and a cobbler's shed. The village shop, school, cooperage, bakers, laundry, garage and clock-maker represent more recent developments. The museum boasts one of the finest collections of steam powered farm machinery, tractors, barn machinery and historical tools. For further information on this house & museum close to the New Forest visit www.breamorehouse.com
