Here we try to list properties in private ownership but open to the public (even if only occasionally) as well as those in the care of the National Trust or English/Scottish Heritage.

18th-century watermill with well-preserved machinery.




This large timber-framed mill on the River Tillingbourne was given in 1932 by a group of anonymous NT benefactors calling themselves ‘Ferguson’s Gang’.

St. George's Church

The old parish church of St. George , dates back to the middle of the 16th century, with an elaborate Newcastle pew built on the south side in 1725 and a north aisle added around 1812.  St George's was closed in 1854, however, the church houses a collection of monuments and fittings, all of which were put into good order in 1963.

The flamboyant Henry VIII is most associated with this majestic palace, which he extended and developed after acquiring it in the 1520's.





Its many royal occupants have ensured the palace has fabulous furnishings, tapestries and paintings.




It is set in 60 acres of formal gardens, which include the famous maze and the Great Vine.

Kew Palace and Queen Charlotte’s Cottage

The most intimate of the five royal palaces, Kew was built as a private house but became a royal residence between 1728 and 1818.
 

Both the palace and the nearby Queen Charlotte’s cottage, built in 1770, are most closely associated with King George III and his family.

How to get there: The palace is situated in Kew Gardens, with the closest entrance to the palace via the main gates.

Tranquil hillside woodland with sweeping views.

Established in the 20th century, this hillside arboretum now contains over 1000 different shrubs and trees, many of them rare.

The most impressive displays are in spring with magnolias, bluebells and azaleas, and in autumn for stunning colours.

There are two lakes and wildlife in abundance.

Grand 18th-century Palladian mansion. Built c.1730 by the Venetian architect Giacomo Leoni, Clandon is notable for its magnificent two-storied Marble Hall.










The house is filled with the superb collection of 18th-century furniture, porcelain, textiles and carpets acquired in the 1920's by the connoisseur Mrs David Gubbay, and also contains the Ivo Forde Meissen collection of Italian comedy figures and a series of Mortlake tapestries.


The attractive gardens contain a parterre, grotto, sunken Dutch garden and a Maori meeting house with a fascinating history.

One of the first and finest gardens of the English Landscape style.

Claremont’s creation and development involved some of the great names in garden history, including Sir John Vanbrugh, Charles Bridgeman, William Kent and ‘Capability’ Brown.

The first gardens were begun c.1715 and later the delights of Claremont were famed throughout Europe.

Since 1975 the Trust has been restoring this layout.

The many features include a lake, island with pavilion, grotto, turf amphitheatre, viewpoints and vistas.

18th-century mansion with Adam interiors and collection of keyboard instruments.







Built in the 1750s for Admiral Boscawen, hero of the Battle of Louisburg, Hatchlands is set in a beautiful 170ha (430 acre) Repton park, offering a variety of waymarked walks.

The house contains the earliest recorded decorations in an English country house by Robert Adam, whose ceilings here appropriately feature nautical motifs.





On display is the Cobbe Collection, the world’s largest group of keyboard instruments associated with famous composers such as Purcell, J. C. Bach, Chopin, Mahler and Elgar.





There is also a small garden by Gertrude Jekyll, flowering from late May to early July and a stunning bluebell wood in May.

House with opulent Edwardian interiors, set in beautiful downland countryside.


In an exceptional setting on the North Downs this Regency house was extensively remodelled in 1906–9 by the Hon. Mrs Ronald Greville, a well-known Edwardian hostess.


Her collection of fine paintings, furniture, porcelain and silver is displayed in the reception rooms and galleries, as it was at the time of her celebrated house parties.

There are extensive grounds, a walled rose garden, lawns and landscape walks through part of the 560ha (1400 acre) estate, including over the Home Farm.



The future King George VI and Queen Elizabeth spent part of their honeymoon here in 1923.
