The Villages of Surrey

Situated in the Tillingbourne Valley between Dorking and Guildford, lie the Saxon villages of Shere ("Essira" in the Domesday Book of 1086) and nearby Gomshall (Gomesele), on the A25.



Today Shere, known as the "Home of Art," is a venue for painters and possesses a number of fascinating old house and inns.



Its ancient and picturesque parish church dedicated to St. James was built in 1190 in the Early English style and has a fine brooch spire and varied stonework.



Said to be one of the most beautiful and historic village churches in Surrey, it is of much interest architecturally and has been a place of pilgrimage for 1000 years. More...

Woodland and open down with wonderful views. An outstanding area of woodland and chalk downland, Box Hill has long been famous as a destination for day-trippers from London. Surprisingly extensive, it has much to offer the rambler and naturalist with many beautiful walks and views towards the South Downs. On the summit there is an information centre, shop, servery and a fort dating from the 1890's (access to exterior only).

Local people, visitors from further afield and those journeying along the A3 can all enjoy the stunning scenery of the Devil’s Punch Bowl and Hindhead Commons from the viewpoint 50yds from the café.

Woodland and open heath with Leith Hill Tower commanding extensive views.

The highest point in south-east England, the hill is crowned by an 18th-century Gothic tower, with panoramic views northwards to London and the English Channel to the south.

There are colourful displays of rhododendrons and bluebells in May and June.

Rugged countryside provides exhilarating walking in woodland and over heathland and farmland.

Riverside site of the signing of Magna Carta.

Runnymede is an attractive area of riverside meadows, grassland and broad-leaved woodland, rich in flora and fauna, and part-designated SSSI.

It was on this site, in 1215, that King John sealed Magna Carta, an event commemorated by the American Bar Association Memorial and John F. Kennedy Memorial.

Also here are the Fairhaven Lodges, designed by Lutyens. On the opposite bank of the Thames from Runnymede lies the important archaeological site of Ankerwycke, an area of parkland acquired by the National Trust in 1998 and containing the remains of the 12th-century St Mary’s Priory and the Ankerwycke Yew, a magnificent tree believed to be over 2000 years old.

At the heart of Witley Common, a fascinating mix of woodland and heath, the purpose built Centre houses a countryside exhibition and hosts school groups and children’s holiday activities.
