This fascinating village is an important centre for fishing, walking and water-based activities and is named after one of a chain of forts built in the wake of the 1715 Jacobite uprising. A collection of sea locks connects Loch Ness with the 60-mile Caledonian Canal, which links Fort William and Inverness. The locks were designed by the engineer Thomas Telford. The village is home to the Caledonian Canal Heritage Centre and The Clansman Centre.
