Situated in the Strathglass area near Inverness, the town of Beauly lies on the banks of the River Beauly and is a haven for salmon fishing, walking and climbing. It is also noted for its ancient, ruined priory built by French monks in the 13th century. Mary Queen of Scots stayed at the priory and bought tartan clothing for her entire court.

The town square is dominated by a memorial to local men called up to become Boer War scouts. Nearby are the glens of Strathfarrar and Cannich, the national nature reserve of Glen Affric and the dramatic Plodda Falls.
