Although in a fairly ruinous state, Urquhart Castle remains an impressive stronghold. Urquhart is one of the largest castles in Scotland with splendid views from its magnificent location on the shore of the famous Loch Ness. Built in the 1230s, seized by the English in 1296, sacked by the MacDonald Lord of the Isles in 1545, the castle was left to fall into decay after 1689. Most of the existing buildings date from the 14th century. Visitor centre with interpretation, audio-visual, shop and café. Located 2 miles S of Drumnadrochit on the A82. Further information available from Historic Scotland.
