Accommodation for families, business travel or romantic getaways

The town of Lanark, lying above the River Clyde, was the focal point for social revolution in the 18th century. It was here that industrialists David Dale and Richard Arkwright set out to use the power of local waterfalls to drive their cotton mills. A few years later Dale's son-in-law, Robert Owen, created a new-style village to benefit his workers, inventing the first day nursery and school playground in the process – and even establishing an Institute for the Formation of Character. Today his village has been turned into a living museum with Falls of Clyde close by.

Kenneth 11 held his Parliament here in 978 and it was in Lanark that the marriage of patriot William ‘Braveheart' Wallace took place. When his wife was later murdered by the English he returned to avenge her by killing Lanark's sheriff.

Each June local people mark the granting of the town's royal charter at the Lanimers Festival by riding round the town's boundaries. For the festival of ‘Whuppity Scourie', schoolchildren run round the parish church three times swinging balls of paper.

The Scottish Wildlife Trust Visitor centre provides information about local wildlife, including bats and falcons.
