Just a short drive from Glasgow in the Clyde valley, this area was originally given to the Hamilton family by Robert the Bruce after the bloody Battle of Bannock burn 1314. The Hamiltons went on to become great Scottish aristocrats as well as dukes of Chatelherault in France.
An old 18th century lodge built for the Hamiltons and designed by William Adam still stands at Chatelherault Park, where walkers will also find the remains of Robert the Bruce’s one-time residence, Cadzow Castle.
Another local castle, 13th century Bothwell, was one of the most indomitable and held off attacks by Edward 1 during the Wars of Independence until he bought in a massive seige engine to penetrate its sturdy walls.
The great explorer David Livingstone was born in the suburb of Blantyre in 1813. He worked as a humble mill worker before departing for Africa in search of Christian converts and the source of the Nile. A heritage centre tells his remarkable life story.
