This town south of the great metropolis of Glasgow was an important centre for the manufacture of iron and steel and had the largest steelworks in Britain in the 20th century. It was here that the hulls for Cunard's big ships Queen Mary and Queen Elizabeth were made. Close to the town are the remains of Craignethan Castle, Scotland's last major castle. It was built by Sir James Hamilton, Master of Works to James V, in 1530. In 1568 Mary Queen of Scots left here to face defeat at the momentous Battle of Langside.
