Sandwiched between the two
bridges over the Firth of Forth, this interesting
town acted as a royal link in the 11th century for
Malcolm 111 and his Saxon wife, Queen Margaret.
They often used a ferry to
cross the Firth as they travelled between
Edinburgh Castle and their palace at Dunfermline.
The 17th century Hawes Inn is mentioned in Sir Walter Scott’s ‘The Antiquary. It is also where Robert Louis Stevenson’s hero David Balfour is tricked into boarding a ship in his 1886 novel ‘Kidnapped’.
