Gourock is essentially a
seaside resort but offers superb views over its
surroundings for anyone willing to walk to the top
of Tower Hill or nearby Lyle Hill, a steep 450ft
climb which leads to panoramas of the spectacular
mountains of Argyll.
An ancient stone, Granny Kempock’s stone, has
stood in the town for many years, apparently a
good luck charm for local fishermen. However, one
resident, Mary Lamont, discovered it could have
the opposite effect. In 1622 she tried to throw it
into the sea, prompting the townsfolk to burn her
at the stake!
