Museums long ago ceased to be stuffy rooms full of glass cases containing bits of old pottery and fossilised bones.

Today even most conventional museums including displays which change but over recent years there has been a growth in industrial and "living" museums.

Here you can learn about local heritage, get a feel for how people lived and worked, the hardships they endured...


Galleries listed include not just civic galleries displaying publicly owned artworks, but also privately owned galleries with items for sale.

Situated in the central square of the High Street in Fort William, the museum is an independent self financing trust with charitable status.


Its world famous for its Jacobite collections, but also has fine collections of social and local history, archaeology, natural history and geology.

 


Collections of special interest include the Alexander Carmichael Collection, the gold coin collection and the Charles Hepburn Jacobite Bequest. Take away a memento of your day by visiting the museum Book & Gift shop.

The Lime Tree Gallery is unique in the West Highlands of Scotland, Fort William.
 

A private gallery privately funded whose aim is to entertain, educate and encourage.
 

To do this the Lime Tree Gallery has hosted shows from the National Art Collections, given contemporary artists a platform to show and sell their work.

 


Often to be found working in his Studio, David draws his inspiration from the dramatic scenery of the Scottish Highlands. On show is a continually changing exhibition of fine art paintings, limited edition prints, greetings cards and Stained Glass Art. Open daily 10.30am to 5.00pm. Admission is Free.
