This East Lothian village lies
close to Preston Mill, Scotland’s oldest working
water-powered grain-mill.
Nearby is the Phantassie
Dovecot. Both are operated by the Scottish
National Trust.
The Scottish engineer John
Rennie (1761-1821) - designer of London’s old
Waterloo Bridge - was born at Phantassie Farm
while the village itself is dominated by the ruins
of Hailes Castle where Mary Queen of Scots and
James Bothwell stayed in 1567 while fleeing from
rebel nobles.
