The main town of Midlothian,
Dalkeith is rich in history and boasts a
remarkable palace that began life as a castle in
the 12th century before being converted into a
plush house some 400 years later by James Douglas,
4th Earl of Morton, regent to James V1. It was
later transformed again by Sir John Vanbrugh.
Nearby Nidry Castle played host to Mary Queen of
Scots after she escaped in 1568 from Loch Leven
Castle.
