Enchanting Barcaldine Castle is Argyll's only ancient castle offering bed and breakfast accommodation. This 16th Century home of the Campbells of Barcaldine, located 9 miles north of Oban, has stacks of character and spectacular surroundings with views up Loch Creran to Glencoe. From the snow-capped mountains in early Spring to the golden colours of Autumn a memorable experience awaits you.

Duart Castle guards the Sound of Mull and is open to the public from March until September.

Home of the Duke and Duchess of Argyll. Since the early 15th century, Inveraray Castle has been the headquarters of the Clan Campbell. The present castle was built in the third quarter of the 18th century.


Kilchurn Castle

A square tower, built by Colin Campbell of Glenorchy c1550, Kilchurn Castle was much enlarged in 1693, incorporating the first purpose built barracks in Scotland. The substantial ruins are some of the most picturesque in the country with spectacular views down Loch Awe. Open summer only. Regular sailings to Kilchurn by steamer from Loch Awe Pier.

Torosay Castle was completed in 1858 and has developed over the years into one of the most popular tourist destinations on the Isle of Mull.

Guided tours available. Services are held twice a day at 9.00am and 9.00pm (or 8.30 in winter). It is approximately 15 minutes walk from the ferry. The adjacent Heritage Centre has a small shop, plus a tearoom (open 10.30am - 4.30pm, Monday - Saturday).

During the nineteenth century the 3rd Marquess of Bute and his architect Sir Robert Rowand Anderson built a new Gothic palace from the ruins of the original Mount Stuart. The house was never finished, an ambitious restoration programme was begun by the late 6th Marquess in the 1980s, and work continues to this day. Mount Stuart’s gardens, date back to roughly 1717 with further developments through to present day.
