This pretty village lying on
the River Spey was created in the 18th century by
the 4th Duke of Gordon who believed the original
village lay too close to his castle. It boasts a
number of antique shops and an abiding reputation
for producing top-quality ‘fiddlers’. Indeed, it
was the birthplace of the well-known fiddler and
composer William Marshall (1748-1833).
The family-run firm of Baxters,
which uses secret recipes in its tinned products,
is based here. The company was founded in 1868 by
George Baxter, a one-time gardener at the former
Gordon Castle.
