Banffshire Maritime Heritage Association

6 to 8 Duff St, Macduff, Aberdeenshire

2006 summer exhibition will be open from June to October 1pm to 5pm everday except Tuesday and Thursday evening from 7pm to 9pm.

2007 summer exhibition will have similar opening times

The Story So Far

The Banffshire Maritime Heritage Association was established because there was a significant interest locally in maritime heritage.

The first exhibition was held in Banff in 2003 and ran for 10 days. In 2004 the exhibition was held in Macduff and ran for 6 weeks. In 2005 an exhibition was planned to be held in Banff but fell through.

The 2006 and 2007 exhibitions will be open from July to October a total of 4 months the most ambitious so far.

All the exhibitions have been established and organised through a committee and a wonderful group of volunteers. The ultimate goal of the association is to have a permanent exhibition in premises owned by the association. Fund-raising will continue to try to achieve this aim.

During the summer season there will be a variety of slideshows / videos and films available to view, these will generally be of the local fishing heritage, but may also show local attractions such as the beautiful Banffshire coast.

We will also endeavour to have available visiting slideshows relating to maritime heritage from areas out-with Banffshire.

The exhibition includes information and displays on Fishing heritage & Shipbuilding,  paintings, old photographs, boats and oil-rig models, stories and poems.

Out of town shopping. Attractive gifts, speciality foods, books, prints, cards, clothing and cafe/restaurant. Disabled access. Open 7 days a week. 12 miles north of Inverurie on the A96.

In the Speyside village of Fochabers is the .  home of Baxters Food Group. In 1868 George Baxter, borrowed £100 from an uncle and other relatives, and opened a small grocery shop in the village. George's wife, Margaret, started making jams and jellies in the back of the shop. Once her jams had found their way to Gordon Castle, their superb quality ensured that they swiftly became popular with the Duke's friends up and down the land. Thus the Baxter reputation began to spread.

With plentiful local supplies of carrots, turnips, leeks, potatoes, raspberries, strawberries, redcurrants and blackcurrants, meat, fish and game, it is not surprising that they diversified further into the production of soups, preserves, condiments, pour over sauces, fruit specialties and a wide range of other fine quality food products.

The visitor centre has a variety of shops selling gifts, clothing, kitchenware as well as Baxters own products. Frequent video presentations provide information on the history of this internationally known business, which is now in the hands of the 4th generation of the family, together with demonstrations and samplings.

The visitor centre also has a restaurant.

Whinnyfold

The village of Whinnyfold, south of Cruden Bay has some rugged coastal scenery and the seals are friendly!

Bullers of Buchan

North of Cruden Bay is the hamlet of Bullers of Buchan.

Take the coastal path from the small car park, past the traditional fishermen's cottages perched precariously on the cliff top, and walk to look down into the nearby chasm.

Here the roof of a sea cave collapsed thousands of years ago leaving a deep hole open at one end to the sea.

It makes a superbly sheltered home for seabirds and the noise of their echoing cries is almost deafening as they fly back and forth through this natural arch.

North Haven is a short distance further and provides a pleasant spot for beach-combing or seal spotting.
