The birth of Cruden Bay apparently took place during a meeting in the North of Scotland Bank, the precise date of the meeting was 16 June 1898 and in March the following year the Cruden Bay Hotel and Golf Course were opened. The Hotel and the 18 hole golf course were originally both owned by the Great North of Scotland Railway Company. Within a month of their opening the company staged a professional tournament which attracted many of the day's leading players including Harry Vardon, James Braid and Ben Sayers. The event proved an outstanding success with Vardon taking the first prize of £30. Cruden Bay was firmly on the golfing map. Cruden Bay is situated on Scotland's Buchan Coast, some 23 miles north east of Aberdeen and seven miles south of Peterhead. The Golf Course has a dramatic setting with nearby Slains Castle providing a rather eerie backdrop. Originally laid out by Thomas Simpson, Cruden Bay is very much a traditional Scottish links course. In addition to the 6287 yard 18 hole championship course, there is also a well-kept 2463 yard 9 hole St Olaf course, opened in 1968.
