Columbian Heritage Trail

There is no designated starting point on The Columban Heritage Trail, it can be picked up at any location and then tailored to individual preferences. Sites range from ancient ruins to modern interpretative centre and illustrate the impact of Colmcille and the Columban cult on Irish spiritual and secular life. It is recommended that you follow the main town signage for Limavady, Strabane, Derry and Letterkenny. within each area, signage to specific attractions can then be followed. A minimum of three days is recommended to cover the entire Heritage Trail. However prebooked tours can involve as little as a couple of hours visiting one particular site.

The City is the only remaining completely Walled City in Ireland and one of the finest examples in Europe of Walled Cities. These famous walls which date back to the early part of the seventeenth century have withstood several sieges, the most celebrated lasting 105 days. There are fine views from the top of the walls which encircle the old city, a circuit of one mile. Open to the public from dawn until dusk. Admission free.

Bellaghy Bawn represents one of the defining periods in the history of the island - the Plantation of Ulster - and dates from 1622 when the village of Bellaghy became one of the first planned settlements in Ireland. The Bawn interprets the history, environment and literature of the area and in particular the poetry of Nobel Laureate, Seamus Heaney who was born nearby. Wheelchair access limited.
