Portaferry Road, Newtownards, County Down, BT22 2AD
Inspirational gardens and neo-classical house, home of the Marquesses of Londonderry, Mount Stewart captures the spirit and character of Edith, Lady Londonderry. Mount Stewart's glorious, unique and unusual gardens were given to the National Trust in 1955. The garden reflects a rich tapestry of design and great planting artistry that was the hallmark of Lady Londonderry. We are currently on a fascinating and exciting journey to conserve and restore the house and gardens at this visitor attraction. Visitors can experience this wonderful place by taking a guided tour of the house, a leisurely stroll in the gardens or a lakeside walk. The mild climate of Strangford Lough allows astonishing levels of planting experimentation. You will enjoy… Exploring gardens recreated using the diaries of Edith, Lady Londonderry… Magnificent views of Strangford Lough from Temple of the Winds… A picturesque lake surrounded by swathes of woodland…. Fascinating heritage and historic world famous artefacts and artwork… Following in the footsteps of Kings, Queens, Prime Ministers and poets. Image: © NTPL / Stephen Robson

The Montgomery family home since 1607, built on land overlooking Strangford Lough.  In 1862 the present house was built, with its Georgian architecture and 18th Century plasterwork. Although the gardens were reduced, there are still many notable features worth seeking out, including ancient woodlands and the ruins of a Cistercian abbey, founded in 1193. By appointment from the 1st May - 1st October.
