With a picturesque harbour draped with fishing nets, the neat resort of Staithes offers spectacular views of sheer cliffs. Explorer Captain James Cook was apprenticed here as a 17-year-old draper's assistant in 1728, although the little shop where he worked has long since been washed away by the ocean. England's highest perpendicular cliff, Boulby (700ft), is just a couple miles away.
