Forestry Commission owned 2,000 hectare forest with 4 mile forest drive, orienteering course, forest and riverside walks, visitor centre/forest shop, tea shop and facilities for cycling / (including cycle hire). On site mountain bike hire Wooden Wheels - Telephone 01388 488222. For extreme mountain biking try Descend Hamsterley downhill mountain bike centre. Also facilities for less-able visitors and wheelchair users including toilets and paths.

Derwent Valley Country Park

12 mile walk along former railway in the Derwent Valley from Swalwell Visitor Centre near the centre of Tyneside to Lydgett's Junction, Consett. Includes Thornley Woodland Centre near Winlaton Mill, picnic areas at Rowlands Gill, Ebchester and Shotley Bridge.
