The City Walls Of Derry

The City is the only remaining completely Walled
City in Ireland and one of the finest examples
in Europe of Walled Cities. These famous walls
which date back to the early part of the
seventeenth century have withstood several
sieges, the most celebrated lasting 105 days.
There are fine views from the top of the walls
which encircle the old city, a circuit of one
mile. Open to the public from dawn until dusk.
Admission free.

There is no designated
starting point on The Columban Heritage Trail,
it can be picked up at any location and then
tailored to individual preferences. Sites range
from ancient ruins to modern interpretative
centre and illustrate the impact of Colmcille
and the Columban cult on Irish spiritual and
secular life.
It is recommended that you
follow the main town signage for Limavady,
Strabane, Derry and Letterkenny. within each
area, signage to specific attractions can then
be followed. A minimum of three days is
recommended to cover the entire Heritage Trail.
However pre-booked tours can involve as little
as a couple of hours visiting one particular
site.

Bellaghy Bawn represents one of the defining
periods in the history of the island - the
Plantation of Ulster - and dates from 1622 when
the village of Bellaghy became one of the first
planned settlements in Ireland. The Bawn
interprets the history, environment and
literature of the area and in particular the
poetry of Nobel Laureate, Seamus Heaney who was
born nearby. Wheelchair access limited.

Forest Walks in County
Londonderry include:- Coleraine Wood,
Mountsandel Wood, Somerset Wood and Castleroe.
Each area has something
different to offer the casual visitor including
activities, woodland and riverside walks, picnic
sites and archaeological sites. Mountsandel Wood
has a mooring jetty and Somerset Wood now with a
half-mile disability friendly trail.

The park is open all
year round and offers beautiful riverside walks.
The Park is the habitat of foxes, badgers and
otters. Over 60 species of bird have been seen
in the park.
The visitor centre and
Green Lane Museum are open on a seasonal basis
providing insight to the natural environment and
a glimpse of bygone days. Above all, the park is
a place for recreation - superb salmon & trout
fishing, canoeing, rock climbing, orienteering
and mile upon mile of riverside & woodland
walks.
Open daily Easter to September, 10am -
6pm. Winter: Mon to Fri, 9am - 5pm.
