This ancient moorland
village probably dates from Saxon times and
provided a base for the ill-fated Catholic
clergyman Nicholas Postgate who risked his
life by spreading the gospel of Catholicism
during the 17th century. Even though he had
grown old he was eventually arrested and hung,
drawn and quartered at York. He later became
known as the martyr of the moors. |
