in England. Ancestral home of Lords Mowbray
(1283), Segrave (1283) and Stourton (1448), the
premier baron of England. Owned in 18th century
by Prince Frederick, Duke of York, brother to
King George IV.

and river. Tours include the unique underground
Sallyport, access to the Keep and the Courthouse
Museum which tells the history of the town and

Home for over 600
years to the Ingilby's, who themselves have an
extremely colourful history. Guided tours show
items collected over the centuries from Civil
War armour to Venetian chandeliers. The castle
is set amongst deer park, lakes and walled
gardens created by 'Capability' Brown. The
gardens contain the National Hyacinth Collection
and the Tropical Plant Collection, which
contains some very unusual specimen plants. Tea
room. Guided tours.

Devil's Arrows
Boroughbridge
These rough-hewn millstone grit pillars known as
the Devil's Arrows were placed in the Bronze Age
in a row on a north-south axis in a field
immediately on the western edge of Boroughbridge.
They are 18ft, 22ft and 22ft 6in tall, the last
of these being taller than anything at
Stonehenge.

St Robert's Cave
Abbey Road, Knaresborough
The remains of St Robert's Cave and Chapel in
Knaresborough are a rare survival of a medieval
heritage. The entire site is cut out of the
magnesium limestone bedrock and consists of the
cave itself cut into the face of the cliff, a
domestic area outside the cave entrance and a
small chapel area which contains the grave and
altar.

Shipton's Cave, legendary birthplace of
Knaresborough's famous 15th-century prophetess.
Porous objects turn into stone with amazing
speed at the Petrifying Well. Wishing well,

Chapel of Our Lady in the Crag
Knaresborough
This is a medieval religious shrine situated on
Abbey Road by the river in Knaresborough. It is
possibly the rarest wayside shrine in England.
For centuries it was known as St Robert's Chapel
and still is to many of those pilgrims who are
able to find this unique and ancient shrine.

architectural style and is among the highest and
yet smallest in the UK. Contains the oldest
Anglo-Saxon crypt in England. The Cathedral
Treasury, contains a large collection of silver
and silver gilt ecclesiastical treasures. Open

A World Heritage Site.
Situated on the banks of the River Skell, the
Abbey ruins provide the dramatic focal point of
the 18th century landscape garden at Studley
Royal, one of the few surviving examples of a
Georgian Green garden, graced with lakes, ponds,
temples, statues, bridges and cascades. Studley
Royal Water Garden is being restored to resemble
that originally planned in the 18th century.

additions. Home of the Lord Grahams since 1624.
Family pictures, furniture and costumes on
display. Visited by Charlotte Bronte. The house
is believed to be an original of Thornfield Hall

garden with orangery and herbaceous borders.

English Heritage Grade II Listed gardens
situated in regal Low Harrogate, which along
with woodland known as The Pinewoods, cover 17
acres. The Gardens contain a greater number of
mineral springs than any other known place. For
music lovers, band concerts take place on Sunday
afternoons throughout the summer. Beautiful
historical buildings such as the Sun Pavilion
and Colonnades sit alongside a wide variety of
outdoor games, children's play area and the
Magnesia Well Café.
